The semi-arid to arid Stable Isotopes of Water Stable water isotopes are a very powerful means to study the global water cycle, and a corner stone of paleoclimate reconstructions. This chapter reviews the concepts and principles of stable isotopes in the atmospheric water cycle. Thereby, the focus is on how synoptic variability of the water cycle establishes longer-term mean isotope sig-nals. SIRFER provides H, C, N, O, and S stable isotope ratio analyses on both organic and inorganic samples. We serve investigators in anthropology, biology, chemistry, ecology, geology, and medicine. SIRFER provides research support to the University of Utah community, and offers the same quality analytical services to those from outside the university. For over 100 years, the U.S. Geological Survey has been collecting water data in Utah with support from Federal, State, and local Cooperators.
Our estimate of the SLV‐wide water isotope budget gives mean tap water isotope ratios of −121.3‰ and −16.1‰ (δ 2 H and δ 18 O) in spring 2013 and suggests a nearly monotonic increase for δ 2 H and an increasing trend with a superimposed seasonal oscillation for δ 18 O during the subsequent samplings (Figures 4b and 4c). The average δ2H and δ18O values of the inlets are similar to the average values of groundwater, which in turn has a composition that is similar to winter precipitation. This suggests For over 100 years, the U.S. Geological Survey has been collecting water data in Utah with support from Federal, State, and local Cooperators. A list of our current cooperators is available online . These pages provide access to water-resources data collected at approximately 1.5 million sites in all 50 States, the District of Columbia, and However, only three of these isotopes are considered to be stable: 16 O, 17 O, and 18 O. Other radioisotopes of oxygen are quite short-lived. Water Isotopes: “Kinds” of Water. At first it might seem that kinds of water with the chemical structure H 2 O based on isotope differences only, are 9 in number: 1 H 2 16 O, H 2 16 O, 3 H 2 16 O, 1 H Tracers commonly used by UGS scientists include stable isotopes of water (oxygen-18 [δ 18 O] and deuterium [δ 2 H]), tritium (3 H), noble gases (helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon), and radiocarbon (carbon-14 [ 14 C] and carbon-13 [δ 13 C]).
